According to local villagers, these beings were around until about a century ago: three feet tall, hairy, and speechless, though human language could be copied by them, like chickens. But if it is – and researchers are looking – it might produce some remarkable remains. These would not be technical. Probably the saddest facet of the whole history is the slow lack of technology it indicates. Ebu Gogo seems to have been a descendent of Homo erectus, Java person man known as, who reached the island about 840,000 years back. It was probably something which needed boats, which seem a quite human-level technology. But because Flores is so far from anywhere that only boat-users or very good swimmers – like elephants – could reach it, the mammals there seem to have shrunk to cope with the not enough food. The tiny hominids hunted a race of dwarf elephants, and ate for preference their infants, whose charred bones have already been present in the cave. So that they had fire once. The Ebu Gogo saved by the villagers had forgotten what language was for they used no tools, and ate their food fresh. At some level, probably, their brains had shrunk so much that they were no longer really human. The moral seems hard to avoid. Why is us human is not our moral characteristics.
